Droid Problem and Smart “Phones”

I love my Droid, don’t get me wrong. It does a lot of great things greatly. However, today I had an issue that really makes me nervous. My phone was sitting in the Motorola brand dock that I bought specifically for the Droid (I don’t know if that was the culprit or not) and it started ringing. So I picked the phone up to answer it and the green and red buttons you use to slide to answer or hang up the call weren’t there! I just looked at it waiting for them to show up. Finally I slid my finger where I knew the green button normally is and it answered! OK, not a big deal. I can deal with that.

Two minutes later I got a call from the same person, except this time the buttons DID show up, but they wouldn’t slide! I sat there hopelessly trying to slide the green button to answer my call but it wouldn’t answer. So I missed the call. This call happened to be my brother, who just IM’d me what he was going to tell me anyway. But what if you were waiting for an extremely important business call?

This isn’t the only issue I’ve had with the phone software. Last week, I had a friend call and leave a voicemail, but there was absolutely no record of him calling, so I didn’t have the number to call him back. The message he left involved him inviting me to a party and asked that I respond with my RSVP! Luckily he called back. But what if that was a client that DIDn’t call back?

There are a lot of situations I would not like to be in when my phone ceases to be a phone. I love that my smart phone is smart and all, but are we forgetting that our smart phones are supposed to be phones first and digital media centers second?

EDIT: I just got another call (about 30 minutes after I posted this) from a guy that is considering buying my car. The phone did the same thing it did before and would not let me slide the green button over to answer! Now when I call back he isn’t picking up. What if that was my opportunity?! I had to restart my phone. I hope he didn’t call back while it was rebooting.
